What drives student success? Are we measuring what students achieve or are we truly understanding who they are?
When we limit a student’s narrative to a transcript, behavior data or attendance patterns, we miss the heart of education: The child behind the numbers.
Throughout my journey as a classroom teacher, school principal, district superintendent, and assistant state superintendent, I have sat at countless tables where decisions were made based solely on test scores, discipline data and attendance rates. But spreadsheet rows fail to tell us why a student is disengaged or what sparks their brilliance. Attendance tells us if a student showed up; it doesn’t tell us if they feel safe, seen, or valued once they enter the schoolhouse. Grades measure compliance and outputs; they do not measure agency, goals, or Hope. To truly serve our students, we must move beyond these surface metrics to uncover the “human behind the data.”

- At the District Level: Strategic planning gains true predictive power. District leaders who monitor Hope and well-being can implement targeted supports before academic decline or chronic absenteeism occurs, driving sustainable increases in academic growth and graduation rates.
